What is USB OTG/USB Host Mode for Android? How to Check Compatibility?
NOTE: This guide is intended for individuals connecting their Serafim S3 to an Android device.
What is USB OTG / USB Host Mode (with HID support)?
USB OTG / USB Host Mode (with HID support) is essential for all Android devices wishing to use the Serafim S3. But what exactly does this mean?
USB OTG (OTG meaning On-The-Go) enables an Android device to function as a “USB host,” allowing it to control and power USB devices. In other words, an Android phone requires USB OTG to supply power to the Serafim S3 for use in your favorite games! Most compatible Android devices automatically support USB OTG and do not require activation. If you need help, you can find information on how to activate it for your device by visiting the manufacturer’s website.
USB Host Mode (with HID support) is a configuration for those whose devices do not inherently support USB OTG. USB Host Mode (with HID support) must be activated using APIs and code by those with technical expertise.
NOTE: The Serafim Support team is unable to assist with setting up USB Host Mode. For guidance on this, consult the device-specific Developer Docs for your Android device.
Can I check if my Android phone supports USB OTG?
The most straightforward way to determine USB OTG support on your Android phone is to download an app and check compatibility.
Download the Easy OTG Checker on your Android device when you can check compatibility. You will need:
- Your Android phone
- A USB OTG cable or adapter, usually included in the box when you buy an Android phone (NOTE: This is not necessary if your USB device connects directly to your device, such as a duo drive Flash Drive)
- Any USB Device (e.g., keyboard, printer, camera, etc.)
Connect your USB device to your Android and use the app to verify compatibility. A green checkmark ✅ indicates that your device is compatible with the Serafim S3!
