Unboxing and Review: Serafim S3 Cloud Gaming Controller for iPhone—Stretchable with High Cost-Performance Ratio, Transforming into a Handheld Console in Seconds
2024-08-29 / Author: Mr. Mad / iPhone Mobile Gaming Controller Serafim S3
Earlier, Mr. Mad reviewed several iPhone 3A game titles and ways to install iOS emulator games. Now, many games are much more enjoyable when played with external controllers like Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch controllers. They provide better grip and intuitive control, helping you avoid the heat issues caused by holding the phone for too long.
However, the problem with iPhone gaming controllers is that they’re not very portable, and at home, you still need to attach them to a stand. Although Sony’s iPhone controller (Backbone One) is available on official websites, it’s quite expensive. That’s when I found a more affordable alternative: the Serafim S3 Cloud Gaming Controller. This controller supports both Android and iPhone devices, as long as they have a USB-C port. There will also be a Lightning version in the future, meaning it will support iPhone models below iPhone 14. Additionally, it works with various iPhone sizes and 3A game titles. So, how does it perform? Let’s dive in and explore!
Serafim S3 Game Controller: iPhone Support in 2024
The Serafim S3 Cloud Gaming Controller used to support only Android phones. However, with the iPhone 15 switching to a USB-C charging port, the Serafim S3 controller has been upgraded to support iOS systems, starting from 2024. It comes in two versions: Lightning and USB-C. Since the manufacturer does not offer a port replacement service, if you’re planning to upgrade to a new iPhone, it’s recommended to go with the USB-C model.
Previously, playing 3A titles on iPhones required using a stand to adjust the phone’s angle, and the joystick needed separate connection steps. In contrast, the Serafim S3 allows you to simply clip the phone using its stretchable design, making it easy to play both indoors and outdoors without being confined to one location.
Unboxing and Hands-on Experience with the Serafim S3 Controller
The design of the Serafim S3 follows a standard configuration: a large D-pad, two joysticks, and independent ABXY control buttons. It also has dedicated buttons for screenshots, video recording, menus, and quick connections. On top of the controller, you’ll find lightweight, short-throw trigger buttons.
The bottom of the two grips features a 3.5mm headphone jack and a USB-C charging port.

Stretchable Design, No Need to Remove Phone Cases
I’ve been using the Serafim S3 controller for about a week now and want to share its strengths and features. If you’re looking for a portable and stretchable clip-on game controller, this is a great option. The controller can extend up to 17.9 cm, accommodating anything from the smallest iPhone mini to the largest 6.7-inch screen of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Even the new 16 Pro Max with its 6.9-inch screen will be supported.
Once your iPhone successfully connects to the Serafim S3, a USB-C connection prompt will appear at the top of the screen, confirming the connection.
Can it be used with phone cases?
From my testing, whether it’s Apple’s original case or cases from well-known brands, as long as the case’s thickness is under 3mm, you can connect the Serafim S3 without removing the case. However, for better heat dissipation or extended play sessions of 3A titles, it’s recommended to remove the case.
Hall Effect Joysticks
What’s special about the Serafim S3 is that its joysticks use Hall effect sensors, which offer better durability and sensitivity. This prevents the drift issues commonly seen with traditional potentiometer joysticks.
Hall Trigger Design
The outer surface of the Serafim S3 features a carbon fiber texture, reducing the plastic feel and enhancing overall quality. The buttons, including the ABXY buttons and the D-pad, are well-positioned with short travel and clear feedback, making operation intuitive and easy.
Interchangeable Ergonomic Grips
The Serafim S3 also includes ergonomic grips, designed with a “big butt” shape that suits both large and small hands for long-term comfort.
This might be the world’s first gaming controller with interchangeable grips. The package includes an additional grip of different thickness, allowing you to switch as needed.
Which grip thickness is more comfortable?
This depends on personal preference, as everyone’s grip feel varies. For me, someone with larger hands, the original curved grip caused slight cramping in my right hand. After switching to the flat grip, the issue disappeared, and extended gaming sessions became more comfortable.
Button and Joystick Feedback
The Serafim S3 offers excellent responsiveness during gameplay. The Hall effect joysticks on both sides are smooth and precise. Initially, the controller may feel small for those with larger hands, but after some time, it feels just right without affecting control. The feedback is noticeably better when paired with the iPhone’s USB-C port, reducing latency compared to Bluetooth and shortening response time for games. During testing on an iPhone 15 Pro Max, both iOS 17 and the beta of iOS 18 supported it without issues.
Supports Multiple iPhone 3A Games and Emulators
Since the Serafim S3 is an iPhone game controller, it’s perfect for running 3A game titles on iOS, such as Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Assassin’s Creed Mirage. The LB and RB buttons offer feedback similar to console gaming, and using the controller is much more comfortable than tapping the screen, avoiding the overheating of the device.
In terms of game compatibility, the Serafim S3 works with popular titles like Diablo IV: Eternal Conflict, Genshin Impact, Zenless Zone Zero, Torchlight, Asphalt 9, and more from the App Store and Apple Arcade. It also works with retro games on emulators like Delta, Gamma, and RetroArch, supporting classics like Super Mario Bros., Street Fighter, and other nostalgic titles.
Who is the Serafim S3 Cloud Gaming Controller for?
This controller is perfect for iPhone users looking for a portable and high-performing gaming controller. With its unique design, Hall effect joysticks, and interchangeable grips, it offers a great gaming experience. Whether you’re indoors or outdoors, you can comfortably enjoy a wide range of games on your iPhone.
If you want to know which games the Serafim S3 supports, you can check the game support list directly on the Serafim official website. Currently, it supports the most games on the App Store, even more than Google Play, Steam Link, Xbox, and PlayStation.
Serafim S3 External Power Supply for Charging While Playing
Many iPhone games now have increasingly intense graphics, which can drain the battery quickly. The Serafim S3 controller has a USB-C charging port on the lower right side, so whether you’re indoors or outdoors, you can connect a charging cable or portable power bank and play while charging, without worrying about the controller or phone running out of battery.
Serafim S3 Wired Headphone Jack for Lag-Free Audio
If you want to significantly enhance your gaming experience, besides connecting AirPods via Bluetooth, the Serafim S3 also features a 3.5mm headphone jack on the lower left side. This allows you to connect wired headphones, which is perfect for games like Resident Evil, letting you fully immerse yourself in the horror game world.
Features of the Serafim Console App
The Serafim S3 can be paired with the Serafim Console App to activate one-touch screenshot, video recording, game streaming, and sharing features on the controller.
The Serafim Console App is an official enhancement tool that not only enables quick access to screenshots, recordings, and game streaming, but also connects to various gaming platforms through the app, such as Steam Link, GeForce Now, PS Remote Play, and Xbox Game Pass.
Unboxing Review: Is the Serafim S3 Worth Buying? Who Is It For?

It also features Hall effect joysticks and interchangeable grips of varying thickness, allowing it to accommodate different iPhone sizes and cases. Its portability makes it easy to enjoy a variety of games, whether you’re indoors or outdoors.
